The cultural capital of Kerala, Thrissur derives its name from 'Tiru-Shiva-Perur' (the town with the name of Lord Shiva). The town has grown over years around Vadakkunnatha Kshetram which is in the centre of a hillock. Sankaracharya is supposed to have spent his last days in this temple. The most important festival of Kerala, 'Pooram' is celebrated here during April-May. Caprisoned elephants and firework and the 'ChendaMelam' and 'Panchavadyam' associated with the Pooram festival attract huge crowds. Thrissur also has a number of churches with gigantic and imposing interiors. The Periyar, The Chalakudy, The Karuvannur and Ponnani (Bharatha Puzha) are the main river systems in the district. The district also has a sea shore of 54km.
