Kannur, the new name of Cannanore, is one of the most important coastal towns. Handlooms and 'Beedi' are the major industries.The district has about 87 km sea side.

Area 2997 sq. km.
Climate Warm tropical climate.  Monsoons from June to October
Location The district is bound in the east by the Western Ghats, in the west by the Arabian Sea, in the north by the Kasargode district and in the south by the Mahe region of Pondicherry.
Religion Hindus and Muslim form the major community, with a minority of Christians.
Language Malayalam is the official language. English is also used among the business class.

TOURIST SPOTS

St. Angelose Fort Built by the Portuguese in 1505 
Aaralam Wildlife sanctuary, located 55km from Thalassery (a commercial town from the ancient time). 
Mahe A part of the Pondicherry State, situated in Kerala State, was under the French earlier, which is now a Union territory, ruled directly by the Govt. of India. The town is located on the banks of Mayyazhi river. 
Ezhimala The rocky area near to the sea. Now this is a Naval Academy. 
Chirackal Was the headquarters of Kolathiri rajas.
Dhramadam Island To reach this small island filled with coconut trees, you need to travel by boat.
