This land christened as "The Venice of the East", is popular for its sparkling backwaters. Alappuzha, a commercial town built along the Vembanad Lake, has a large network of canals, which cutting through the town, provide its lifeline. One of the grandest sights offered by Alappuzha is the mammoth annual snake-boat race held in the backwaters on its outskirts. The snake-boat resembles a huge snake, with its hood raised above water. With over a hundred oarsmen, it is the most impressive in regatta. Kerala's  famous coir products which find their way to foreign markets, are made in factories here and are shipped from this port.

TOURIST SPOTS

Pathiramanal A small island between Muhamma and Kumarakom
Kuttanad Popularly known as the 'Paddy Store' of Kerala. Charming site of dancing paddy leaves in the cool breeze, that flows over the backwaters.  
Punnamada Lake It is here the famous 'Nehru Trophy' boat race is being conducted every year during Onam season (on the second Saturday of August)
Alappuzha Beach A cool place to spend your evenings
Vembanad Lake The sparkling backwaters spread over miles, where you can spend your leisure on house boats.
Krishnapuram Palace This palace at Kayamkulam, was built by Marthanda Varma in the 18th century. There is a museum in this palace which houses rare rural paintings.
